Transferring funds in between banks used to be all sorts of inconvenient. Customers would have to waste time in line, or pay expensive transaction fees. Now, the nation’s leading mobile wallet provider GCash has once again revolutionized the fintech scene by letting customers transfer funds from their GCash account to 30+ banks anywhere they are, anytime they want, and without the costs.

Done via the GCash App, customers can freely transfer funds from their GCash wallet to participating banks within seconds – BPI, BDO, MetroBank, and others, to name a few – as long as they have the account name, the account number of the receiver, and internet connectivity. This is offered by GCash at no extra charge to the consumer.

“This new technology from GCash and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas allows customers to enjoy the freedom of being able to transfer funds conveniently with just their smartphone,” said Anthony Thomas, President and CEO of Mynt. “GCash will change the perception that transferring funds to banks is time-consuming and expensive,” he added.

Earlier this year, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas developed InstaPay, a system under the National Retail Payment System (NRPS) framework that aims to unify all forms of electronic payments into a centralized real-time automated clearing house (ACH), allowing for faster and smoother inter-network transactions amongst financial institutions, including banks and electronic money issuers.

Getting a GCash account is easy. Users from all networks can download the GCash App for free from the App Store or from Google Play and sign up for an account.

To fund their GCash account, a user can cash-in via local Mastercard or VISA debit cards, InstaPay from bank apps that have the service available, and direct bank deposits with preferred banks. They can also visit over 16,000 GCash Partner Outlets nationwide, like 7-Eleven, SM Business Centers, Robinsons Business Centers, Puregold branches, and Villarica Pawnshop branches, and tell the cashier to cash-in to their GCash account. Cashing-in to a GCash account is free.

Globe Business, the information and communications technology (ICT) arm of Globe Telecom, brings out an array of powerful tools and solutions that will enable enterprises to build and secure their business and digital ecosystems for seamless connections with customers.

Together with world-class providers Amazon Web Services, Google, RightCloud, GoCanvas, Trustwave, and Bitsight, Globe Business was able to capitalize on Cloud and Cybersecurity innovations to help companies glide smoothly in their journey towards digitalization. These tools took center stage during the “Breakthrough with Globe Business Solutions” event at EDSA Shangri-la Hotel attended by key leaders and executives from various industries.

“Globe has gone through the same journey as most of our enterprise clients. We always need to try new technologies, set up quickly at minimal cost, and constantly test new products until we figure out what will work for our customers. We cannot do this on traditional and on-premise environments where costs will be too high. Cloud has given us the flexibility and ability to innovate quickly, continuously, and at scale,” said Ernest Cu, Globe President and CEO.

He added: “As an enterprise, we also have access to critical information about our customers and as a responsible company, we need to protect that by ensuring that we have the right Cybersecurity tools in place to fight evolving threats that may compromise our data, jeopardize our operations, and most importantly impact our customers.”

Thus, to help businesses overcome corporate and technological challenges while creating and maximizing their value to the stakeholders, Globe Business offers a full suite of business solutions that drive business agility, scalability, and maximizes the current potentials of the Cloud complimented by Cybersecurity tools.

The advent of Cloud in the country has revolutionized the way businesses operate since it is easy to use as well as provides a platform that can store, analyze and calculate data. In August 2011, Globe Business became the first telecom company to provide Cloud computing solutions to the country when it launched its own Private Cloud, a service that enables its enterprise customers to acquire their cloud and optional connectivity from one provider and allowing an end-to-end solution.

Today, aside from Globe Private Cloud, Globe Business has expanded its suite of solutions to include Amazon Web Services. It also offers an array of cloud-based business applications like G Suite and GoCanvas, among others. All of these are aimed to provide enterprises with greater scalability, agility, and ease of collaboration among its workforce.

To keep enterprise data safe, secure and protected, Globe Business has put up the first and only Federated Advanced Security Operations Center (ASOC) in the Philippines. The Globe Federated ASOC offers customer service platform management, threat detection, threat hunting and incident response for its own network and the network of its customers. It is linked to Trustwave’s global network of nine ASOCs from around the world which gives Globe the ability to follow the threat where and when it happens and deliver proactive security services.

“Globe Business has been relentless in coming up with advanced solutions that fit the needs of our enterprise clients as they continue to grow and expand. We want to help them gain new customers faster and provide them with the ability to serve new markets quickly for improved profitability and lasting relationship with their customers. We want our clients to know that we can help them manage risks and strengthen digital trust to make their brands become more successful in the 21st century,” said Peter Maquera, Globe Senior Vice President for Enterprise Group.

Part of Globe Telecom’s vision is to help businesses flourish and fuel the growth of the country’s economy. Thus, to become an enabler of meaningful changes in enterprises, Globe provides them with a way to harness technology and transform digitally.

Globe Telecom formally announced its fifth-generation (5G) wireless technology adoption in the Philippines, with the first 5G Globe At Home service to be commercially available by the second quarter of 2019.

The 5G network will boast of higher speeds, lower latency, and better capacity. This will enable Globe to deploy fixed wireless broadband at a fiber speed.

Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu said the 5G network technology would enable Globe to use Air Fiber technology in relation to deployment of fixed wireless broadband that would benefit individual customers at home and business clients alike. “Air Fiber internet, which makes use of fixed location wireless radios instead of fiber, could provide speeds ranging from 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps,” Cu added.

Globe will start rolling out 5G services commercially in the Philippines mid-2019. “We have been preparing our network for some time now with our existing vendor partners, including Huawei Technologies. We are happy to bring the Philippines in line with other countries that are early adopters of 5G. Once again, we stay true to our commitment to bring first-world internet in the country,” Cu said.

The technology will also enable the company to go over the circuitous approval process of deploying a fiber optic cable, which involves multiple permits from local government units (LGUs). The right of the process can sometimes take years to obtain delaying fiber optic roll-out completion. “We can bring internet to more homes by deploying 5G compared to a typical fiber optic roll-out,” Cu said.

The 5G network technology is expected to accelerate the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) in the country. Globe earlier announced said it is enabling its network by utilizing its spectrum assets particularly the 700-megahertz band.

Globe is currently piloting Narrow Band- Internet of Things (NB-IoT) technology while enhancing its mobile data services. Due to its inherent advantage of long reach, this spectrum is ideal to support NB-IoT services. NB-IoT is one of the three 3GPP standards-based low power wide area (LPWA) technologies developed to enable a wide range of new IoT devices and services. NB-IoT, as a standard, is more developed as compared to other defined 3GPP standards. Globe and Huawei are collaborating in this journey, ensuring network readiness to support these services.

The Globe network has one of the largest deployment of Massive MIMO (MM) in Asia as part of its strategic technology roadmap since 2016. MM is the fundamental radio access technology for 5G network.

Globe has been spending over 31% of its annual total revenues to upgrade and expand its telecommunication and IT infrastructure. For years, Globe has been ramping up its capital spend from P21.1 billion in 2012 to P36.7 billion in 2016 and P42.5 billion in 2017, in order to provide its subscribers of better broadband services. Globe recently disclosed that it will further accelerate its capital spend to over P43.5 billion this year.

Back in November 2015, Globe extended its partnership with Huawei, signing a five-year contract involving the planning and design of a wireless broadband network, as well as the creation of a wireless innovation center. Huawei was also the technology partner of Globe when it implemented a $700-million network modernization program that began in 2011.

The King of Clay once again lives up to his name! Rafael Nadal bagged his 11th Roland-Garros title on Sunday, now his 17th Grand Slam title. The 32-year-old from Spain played against Dominic Thiem from Austria and won 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. This win elevates Nadal’s Roland-Garros win-loss record to a jaw-dropping 86-2. “It’s amazing now, I can’t describe my feelings. It’s not even a dream to win here 11 times because it’s impossible to think something like this,” said Nadal.

Meanwhile, in the Women’s division, world number one Simona Halep bagged the first Grand Slam title of her career. The 26-year-old Romanian, who had lost her three previous major finals, raced away with the victory against American 10th seed Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-4, 6-1. “In the last game, I felt like I can’t breathe anymore. I did everything I could. It’s amazing what is happening now,” Halep said.

The Philippines’ teen tennis star Alexandra “Alex” Eala also got in on the Roland Garros action. The 13-year-old Filipina participated in two rounds for the Junior French Championships qualifiers. She advanced to the second round after winning her opening match against Paula Arias Manjon of Spain, 6-4, 6-4. Her French Open bid ended when she lost to Peyton Stearns of USA, 6-2, 6-4. However, Eala remained optimistic and grateful for the historic experience of playing in her first International Tennis Federation (ITF) 18-under match. “While I lost today, I am so happy that I reached the final qualifying round at the Junior French Open Championships,” she said on her Facebook post. After receiving a wildcard slot to the tournament by ITF board member and Fédération Française de Tennis (FF Tennis) Président Bernard Giudicelli last February, Eala became the first and the youngest Filipino to qualify for Roland Garros Juniors.

Globe Telecom joins the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Brigada Eskwela 2018 with the theme, “Isang DepEd, Isang Pamayanan, Isang Bayanihan Para sa Handa at Ligtas na Paaralan,” as part of its effort to encourage more Filipinos to take on volunteer initiatives via Time Please, a collaboration between the telecom firm and The Walt Disney Company, Philippines.

Tapping into the selfless hearts of Filipinos, Globe aims to make volunteer activities, especially during the Brigada Eskwela season, accessible and fun to do with friends and family. Through Time Please, non-government organizations, government agencies, private companies, the academe, and even individuals can easily connect with communities to continue spreading acts of kindness to those who are in need.

Globe employees take time off to prepare public school facilities for class opening.

“Globe wants to cultivate a society that cares for humanity. We hope that with the nationwide initiative like Time Please, we can engage more individuals, communities, and companies to actively contribute to nation-building by sharing their time, talent, and treasure like what we are doing for Brigada Eskwela,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications. Globe participates in Brigada Eskwela each year, with employee volunteers helping clean, paint, and repair classrooms, tables and chairs in time for the opening of classes.

“Gawin po natin ang lahat ng ating magagawa, nang sa gayon, iyong mga bagay na kung tayo po’y nag-iisa lamang ay hindi natin maaabot, sa pamamagitan ng partnership ay ating maaabot. Ito iyong mga bagay, iyong mga pangarap, iyong mga layunin, na hindi po natin makakamtan kung tayo po’y nag-iisa lamang (Let us do everything we can so that the things that we cannot do alone may be achieved through partnerships. These includes our dreams and objectives which we cannot attain if we are alone),” Undersecretary for Legislative Affairs, External Partnerships, and School Sports Tonisito Umali said in a recent press conference for Brigada Eskwela.

Globe has always supported education-related activities including the Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) which promotes responsible digital citizenship; PRISM, which is aimed at advancing digital literacy of teachers; and Strategy Innovation, and Transformation (ShiftED), which assists the government and schools in developing globally-competitive students and teachers.

Time Please is also in line with Globe Telecom’s commitment to nine of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and appeals to the Filipinos’ strong culture of volunteerism rooted in the bayanihan spirit to collectively contribute to social development.

With the assistance of Future Maker iVolunteer Philippines, Globe has made it easier for everyone to create or look for volunteer opportunities by signing up at www.timeplease.ph and the volunteer portal of Gawad Kalinga through any device with Internet access. Groups comprised of two to four volunteers must be formed to join the activities. Additionally, companies without existing volunteer programs would be able to match their employees to various volunteering opportunities that suit them, while companies with existing volunteer programs may also register.

By joining this volunteer program and registering to the site, every group’s hours are counted while they gain the chance to win prizes from Globe.

WiFi has become as basic in many homes as water and electricity. From Lola to bunso, the whole family enjoys being online for different reasons. Whether it’s to post photos on Facebook, book family travel tickets or do some serious research for a term paper, WiFi has become more of a need than a want.

However, 76% of households still struggle with their WiFi speed, while 61% expect their service provider to ensure connectivity in all areas of their home. WiFi connectivity though is heavily dependent on the reach of routers. To maximize WiFi all around the house and address the most common connectivity concern of Filipino households, Globe At Home introduces the WiFi Mesh!

With WiFi Mesh, customers can maximize their connection and not have to worry about being too far from their router. The device boosts the WiFi signal in each room it is in, so that a user can walk around the house and experience no loss of speed.

Globe at Home offers two kinds of WiFi Mesh options, each perfect for a different kind of customer. First is the TPLink WiFi Mesh which provides seamless and secure WiFi in every room it is placed in. It does so by automatically connecting other TPLink devices, creating a WiFi web that will bring fast connections no matter where the customer is. This device is suitable for families with kids, as it includes a parental control that can manage and restrict content, as well as protect the home network with a firewall and wireless encryption.

Second is the Airties WiFi Mesh that offers the same WiFi web and prioritizes video signals over other internet traffic. This makes it the ideal choice for those who need speedy and reliable connections for watching movies and TV shows, and playing online games in high definition. Both devices are available to new and existing customers charged to bill at P150/month for 24 months added on to the Globe At Home plan or cash on delivery at P3,600.

Globe also pushes its #PlayItRight advocacy, reminding its customers and the public that content is best watched using legitimate sources like recognized streaming platforms only.

For more information on the WiFi Mesh devices, visit the website at shop.globe.com.ph/tech-squad or call the Globe hotline at 730-1010.

#PlayItRight, Globe Telecom’s anti-piracy advocacy, is fully-supported by the Optical Media Board (OMB) as Globe helps educate the general public against malware, cybersecurity threats and access to illegal digital content and torrent sites.

Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu said that the support of OMB, a government agency dedicated to combat piracy, is a big boost to the #PlayItRight campaign. “We are grateful to OMB for recognizing our advocacy on anti-piracy. Our partnership will reinforce our educational drive against the illegal distribution of copyrighted content to a greater reach,” Cu explained.

“The internet has become the main source of almost all the copyright infringement content nowadays and we need all the help we can get. We are encouraging the OMB to invite other stakeholders as well such as the cinemas to collaborate with our education drive to target the moviegoers,” Cu added.

Optical Media Board Chair & CEO Atty. Anselmo B. Adriano said that the biggest problem of OMB is the big market for pirated videos out there because people don’t know why they should not buy pirated materials. “In as much as we try to be creative in our enforcement and disrupt the distribution chain and the retail chain for pirated video, there is still a big market for it. This is why we need to target the market through education. This is the reason why we are partnering with other organizations and companies like Globe to push for more education,” Adriano exclaimed.

The OMB will also actively participate in the Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) of Globe that teaches responsible use of the internet to children in public schools by including illegal downloading of illegal content online in the training module.

The OMB has been successful in curbing out pirated movies, music and software in DVDs nationwide and educating the public against illegal camcording in cinemas through the years. The OMB is created pursuant to Republic Act No. 9239 under the Office of the President to regulate the production, use, and distribution of optical and magnetic media in the country.

Having partnered with global and local content creators and distributors for its content business, Globe has taken an active role in promoting legitimate sources of online content. In 2017, the company launched the #PlayItRight advocacy to help the entertainment industry curb piracy and protect intellectual property rights.

Results of the study were announced in association with the World Economic Forum on Safer Internet Day 2018.

According to the National DQ Impact Report, up to 73% of Filipino students, aged 8 to 12, are exposed to at least one cyber-risk, which include cyber-bullying, video gaming addiction, meeting strangers online, online sexual behaviors. This is significantly higher than the global average of 56%.

“The study provides a deeper understanding of the Filipino students’ online behavior. With Globe Telecom’s Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP), we hope to further equip the youth to adapt to the new digital environment and help shape the future leaders in our country,” said Globe Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications Yoly Crisanto.

The study also showed that the average 8-12-year-old Filipino child spends about 34 hours per week in front of digital screens for entertainment alone, 2 hours higher than the global average. 53% of them access the Internet through their own personal mobile phones, and 50% of them are highly active on social media platforms. In addition, the study found that Filipino children use social media sites such as Facebook (67% compared to 39%) significantly more than the global average, which may lead to higher exposure to online cyber-risks.

“It is very important for Filipino children to learn how to use social media more safely and responsibly. They are highly involved in what we call a “risky-pair”: using their mobile phones and actively engaging in social media activities compared to children in other countries,” says Dr Yuhyun Park, founder of the DQ Institute.

Crisanto emphasized that the National DQ Impact Report will be used in addressing cyber-risks that Filipino students are most susceptible with and in improving digital citizenship level of students in the country, as part of the company’s DTP initiative.

Starting 2016, Globe, in collaboration with DepEd, undertook an initiative for increased digital literacy and online responsibility in schools through two key programs, recognizing it is a collective responsibility to build a safe support network for each and every child.

Through the Global Filipino Schools (GFS) Program, every DepEd division in the country is provided a teacher training hub to bring 21st-century learning in public schools through technology. The program equips one showcase school per division with free internet connectivity, mobile ICT equipment for learning, and teacher training on ICT integration in the classroom.

Under the company’s Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP), on the other hand, students and teachers are also provided free workshops on responsible digital citizenship. Workshops cover principles on online safety and security, online etiquette and responsibility, online leadership and empowerment, and how to identify false information from credible information online.

DQ is defined as the sum of technical, mental and social competencies essential to digital life. It encompasses the skills and values that are needed to thrive as responsible netizens to answer the demands of the digital era. These skills empower citizens to have ethical and responsible use of technology, an attribute that marks the leaders of tomorrow.
