We’re all worried about our finances. Some tend to worry more than others, but we would all probably have a nice load dropped off our back if we had a little bit more money. Well, a lot of people choose to start another business, and secure themselves some additional income. Also, some people decide that they are tired of their 9 to 5, and want to be their own boss for a change. These are all good reasons to start a new job, but the big question still remains: which business to choose? If you are wondering the same thing, here’s a list that might help you decide:

Become a host

Do you like working with people? Are you good at organizing things? If both answers to these questions are yes, then there is a wonderful world of hosting out there waiting for you to take your pick. Here are just a few examples:

Open a B&B – If you have a couple of extra rooms in your house, or if you want to invest in buying a place, opening a bed & breakfast can be a great solution. You’ll meet interesting people from all over the world and if you create a good theme for your B&B, keep it nice and tidy and make sure that people staying there have a good time – you are set up for success.

Host venues – If you have a large estate with a nice outdoor space, you can utilize that and become a host for everything from weddings and birthday parties to business meetings, art exhibits and banquets. If you develop a good relationship with local florists and caterers, you can offer complete services in your venue and get even more people interested. This is also a good idea if you want to turn it into a seasonal job. You can always choose to book events only during the summer or whichever other period you choose.

Rent out your rooms or apartment – There are many great websites and companies where you can rent out your extra room, or the entire apartment if you won’t be using it for some time. This way you have complete control over who you host, for how long, and for what price. It will give you a chance to meet a lot of new people and doesn’t require much effort or investment.

Get Crafty

Are you an artistic soul, but you’re stuck with a desk job? By launching a business on the side, you can see how successful you are with your art and decide if it’s the right thing for you to do full time. You can sell it at the local fair, open an Etsy shop or just sell it via your Facebook or Instagram page. A couple of things you can try are:

Handmade jewelry – You don’t need to have pure silver to start making jewelry. On the contrary – the more creative the better! Use things that most people would never use to make jewelry. Make it unique and you’ll surely find an audience for it!

Custom clothes – People love anything that is handmade and unique, and most of all they love wearing it. Learning some basic sewing and textile dying techniques will help you get started. Buy some old, cheap pieces in the thrift store and upcycle them to amazing unique pieces that people will love.

Giant art pieces – If you’re good with a paintbrush or a spray can, you can offer to embellish large surfaces of people’s homes. Paint delicate designs on the walls of people’s living rooms, fun characters in children’s bedrooms or giant floral designs to cover a wall in their garden. It is definitely more unique and personalized than just slapping some stickers on. It’s a unique business, so you have a good chance of being the only person who does that in your area.

Convenience work

People like when they have things done for them and they are often happy to pay a little extra, as long as there are others willing to do those things.

Warehouse business – Find a place that is big and empty and offer to store things other people don’t have the space for, but don’t want to throw away. Get scissor lifts and a place where you can store everything, and you are good to go. Once you are set, all you have to do is find people with too much stuff and not enough space – and that’s not going to be difficult at all.

Cleaning business – If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty, you can clean other people’s houses or office spaces for money. Or, if you don’t want to get dirty yourself, you can hire people and act as the middle man, talking to clients and coordinating the schedules.

So, if you want to try your luck with a new business these ideas might help you get started, but as always, the best ideas are the most original ones. Therefore, make sure you come up with something both interesting and useful.
