Globe Telecom formally announced its fifth-generation (5G) wireless technology adoption in the Philippines, with the first 5G Globe At Home service to be commercially available by the second quarter of 2019.

The 5G network will boast of higher speeds, lower latency, and better capacity. This will enable Globe to deploy fixed wireless broadband at a fiber speed.

Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu said the 5G network technology would enable Globe to use Air Fiber technology in relation to deployment of fixed wireless broadband that would benefit individual customers at home and business clients alike. “Air Fiber internet, which makes use of fixed location wireless radios instead of fiber, could provide speeds ranging from 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps,” Cu added.

Globe will start rolling out 5G services commercially in the Philippines mid-2019. “We have been preparing our network for some time now with our existing vendor partners, including Huawei Technologies. We are happy to bring the Philippines in line with other countries that are early adopters of 5G. Once again, we stay true to our commitment to bring first-world internet in the country,” Cu said.

The technology will also enable the company to go over the circuitous approval process of deploying a fiber optic cable, which involves multiple permits from local government units (LGUs). The right of the process can sometimes take years to obtain delaying fiber optic roll-out completion. “We can bring internet to more homes by deploying 5G compared to a typical fiber optic roll-out,” Cu said.

The 5G network technology is expected to accelerate the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) in the country. Globe earlier announced said it is enabling its network by utilizing its spectrum assets particularly the 700-megahertz band.

Globe is currently piloting Narrow Band- Internet of Things (NB-IoT) technology while enhancing its mobile data services. Due to its inherent advantage of long reach, this spectrum is ideal to support NB-IoT services. NB-IoT is one of the three 3GPP standards-based low power wide area (LPWA) technologies developed to enable a wide range of new IoT devices and services. NB-IoT, as a standard, is more developed as compared to other defined 3GPP standards. Globe and Huawei are collaborating in this journey, ensuring network readiness to support these services.

The Globe network has one of the largest deployment of Massive MIMO (MM) in Asia as part of its strategic technology roadmap since 2016. MM is the fundamental radio access technology for 5G network.

Globe has been spending over 31% of its annual total revenues to upgrade and expand its telecommunication and IT infrastructure. For years, Globe has been ramping up its capital spend from P21.1 billion in 2012 to P36.7 billion in 2016 and P42.5 billion in 2017, in order to provide its subscribers of better broadband services. Globe recently disclosed that it will further accelerate its capital spend to over P43.5 billion this year.

Back in November 2015, Globe extended its partnership with Huawei, signing a five-year contract involving the planning and design of a wireless broadband network, as well as the creation of a wireless innovation center. Huawei was also the technology partner of Globe when it implemented a $700-million network modernization program that began in 2011.

#PlayItRight, Globe Telecom’s anti-piracy advocacy, is fully-supported by the Optical Media Board (OMB) as Globe helps educate the general public against malware, cybersecurity threats and access to illegal digital content and torrent sites.

Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu said that the support of OMB, a government agency dedicated to combat piracy, is a big boost to the #PlayItRight campaign. “We are grateful to OMB for recognizing our advocacy on anti-piracy. Our partnership will reinforce our educational drive against the illegal distribution of copyrighted content to a greater reach,” Cu explained.

“The internet has become the main source of almost all the copyright infringement content nowadays and we need all the help we can get. We are encouraging the OMB to invite other stakeholders as well such as the cinemas to collaborate with our education drive to target the moviegoers,” Cu added.

Optical Media Board Chair & CEO Atty. Anselmo B. Adriano said that the biggest problem of OMB is the big market for pirated videos out there because people don’t know why they should not buy pirated materials. “In as much as we try to be creative in our enforcement and disrupt the distribution chain and the retail chain for pirated video, there is still a big market for it. This is why we need to target the market through education. This is the reason why we are partnering with other organizations and companies like Globe to push for more education,” Adriano exclaimed.

The OMB will also actively participate in the Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) of Globe that teaches responsible use of the internet to children in public schools by including illegal downloading of illegal content online in the training module.

The OMB has been successful in curbing out pirated movies, music and software in DVDs nationwide and educating the public against illegal camcording in cinemas through the years. The OMB is created pursuant to Republic Act No. 9239 under the Office of the President to regulate the production, use, and distribution of optical and magnetic media in the country.

Having partnered with global and local content creators and distributors for its content business, Globe has taken an active role in promoting legitimate sources of online content. In 2017, the company launched the #PlayItRight advocacy to help the entertainment industry curb piracy and protect intellectual property rights.

The 2018 National DQ Impact Report, a collaborative work among DQ Institute, Globe and DepEd, involved 3, 819 primary public and private school students. The study profiled the students’ level of access to devices and the internet, types of online activities they are involved in and their susceptibility to cyber-risks. Results of the study were announced in association with the World Economic Forum on Safer Internet Day 2018.

According to the National DQ Impact Report, up to 73% of Filipino students, aged 8 to 12, are exposed to at least one cyber-risk, which include cyber-bullying, video gaming addiction, meeting strangers online, online sexual behaviors. This is significantly higher than the global average of 56%.

“The study provides a deeper understanding of the Filipino students’ online behavior. With Globe Telecom’s Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP), we hope to further equip the youth to adapt to the new digital environment and help shape the future leaders in our country,” said Globe Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications Yoly Crisanto.

The study also showed that the average 8-12-year-old Filipino child spends about 34 hours per week in front of digital screens for entertainment alone, 2 hours higher than the global average. 53% of them access the Internet through their own personal mobile phones, and 50% of them are highly active on social media platforms. In addition, the study found that Filipino children use social media sites such as Facebook (67% compared to 39%) significantly more than the global average, which may lead to higher exposure to online cyber-risks.

“It is very important for Filipino children to learn how to use social media more safely and responsibly. They are highly involved in what we call a “risky-pair”: using their mobile phones and actively engaging in social media activities compared to children in other countries,” says Dr Yuhyun Park, founder of the DQ Institute.

Crisanto emphasized that the National DQ Impact Report will be used in addressing cyber-risks that Filipino students are most susceptible with and in improving digital citizenship level of students in the country, as part of the company’s DTP initiative.

Starting 2016, Globe, in collaboration with DepEd, undertook an initiative for increased digital literacy and online responsibility in schools through two key programs, recognizing it is a collective responsibility to build a safe support network for each and every child.

Under the company’s Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP), on the other hand, students and teachers are also provided free workshops on responsible digital citizenship. Workshops cover principles on online safety and security, online etiquette and responsibility, online leadership and empowerment, and how to identify false information from credible information online.

DQ is defined as the sum of technical, mental and social competencies essential to digital life.
Globe tapped Mano Amiga Academy, a non-profit K-12 school with international standards whose roots come from Latin America, to design and facilitate the workshop and lead the coaching course. Mano Amiga, Spanish for “helping hand”, is renowned for developing its own intensive teacher training program which emphasizes child-centered instruction, active learning, and development of 21st-century learning skills like Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity.

“For quality education to take place, the development of quality teachers is vital. With our collective efforts, we believe we can make a difference in the public education sector by nurturing a progressive mindset among teachers and creating independent learners among public school students,” said Mano Amiga Executive Director Eleanor Pinugu.

Globe has been running the GFS program since 2012. Using a modern approach to K-12 learning with long-term support from DepEd, GFS equips schools through three key components: internet connectivity, mobile tech, and specialized teacher training on 21st-century approach to education.

Yoly Crisanto, Globe SVP for Corporate Communications said: “Through the years, we’ve built meaningful relationships with various partners in the education space, with the objective of jointly providing the needed support for the public education sector on a national scale. We’re very fortunate that we now have global partners with the same objective of propagating 21st-century learning to the youth around the country.”

Under the partnership, Adobe, a global software company which helps people design and deliver great digital experiences, will provide public school teachers with training on digital media solutions such as Adobe Creative Cloud and online educational apps to help them develop their students’ creativity and confidence.

“Students today are growing up in a tech-enabled and data-driven world. They are being challenged in new ways and are expected to be more creative in their learning. The skills they require to succeed in a world of automation are changing rapidly too. Teachers need to have access to updated training and modern digital media tools, so they can nurture the best in their students and build creativity and innovative problem-solving skills that the future workforce will need,” said Wayne Weisse, Director, Education & Government, Adobe Asia Pacific.

On the other hand, Da Vinci Media, which originated from Europe and has a presence in over 90 countries, will be providing a workshop on design thinking and use of mobile apps for learning. The organization operates an interactive video-on-demand app, Da Vinci Kids, which provides K-12 learners with educational videos in more than 90 countries and in various languages.

CEO of Da Vinci Kids Ferdinand Habsburg said: “We are delighted to partner with Globe in their superb support programme for teacher training. Da Vinci Kids is an advocate of innovative educational videos that make learning fun and memorable.”

With e-learning platform Quipper School, educators will be able to send assignments and track student progress online while students can enjoy interactive e-learning anytime, anywhere, on smart devices. Quipper will be providing a workshop on how to use mobile solutions that help save time and effectively monitor student performance and workload.

Quipper Country Manager Yuki Naotori said: “Quipper believes that teachers can accomplish so much more with the right tools and resources. With real-time data on student performance, educators are able to tailor their method of instruction to better suit their students’ needs. In addition, ready-made K-12 aligned resources and a platform that automates various tasks enable teachers to spend more time on what matters most – their students.”

Seventy-one public schools were added to the GFS program this year. To date, the program is present in 200 DepEd divisions and in 16 out of the 17 Philippine regions with final region – the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao, already scheduled in June.

Since scaling the program in 2014, every committed DepEd Division around the country was asked to nominate a school to serve as the model school and teacher training hub for its city/province in delivering 21st-century education.

“We believe the involvement of the new set of partners assembled by Globe can further forward 21st-century learning outcomes in the public school setting, such as media and information literacy, creativity and innovation skills, communication skills, collaboration skills, critical thinking, among many others. The DepEd Region embraces the opportunity to work with all the GFS program stakeholders in creating the ideal education landscape across the Philippines,” said Dr. Juliet A. Jeruta; Ph.D. CESO V, Regional Director of the Department of Education Regional Office of Central Visayas.

The GFS Program includes equipping each selected school with free internet connectivity via postpaid accounts such Fiber, DSL or LTE connectivity depending on network availability in the area. The free internet is meant to enhance the teaching and learning experience of teachers and students of the school.

The GFS Program package also includes a donation of mobile tech equipment for learning to the schools such as projectors, virtual reality goggles, video casting devices, , netbooks/ tablets, and additional prepaid WiFi devices such as the Globe PrePaid WiFi @ Home Bundles, Globe Prepaid Supersticks, and a mobile cart.

Globe Telecom protects its customers against unscrupulous practices of some third-party value-added service (VAS) providers as it enforces tighter rules to prevent prepaid load deduction, or which customers ofter mistake as “nakaw load”.

Unknown load deductions happen when customers click on an online advertisement link or button of VAS providers. As a rule, customers should get a verification code via SMS on how to opt-in as well as another SMS for successful subscription and cancellation instructions. However, there are instances when partners circumvent the rule, thus, automatically enrolling the customers without consent. This in effect happened to a prepaid customer who complained online about load decrementation from a VAS provider, GotDeals Mobile, Inc.

GotDeals Mobile, Inc., issued a public apology after a customer complained in social media about alleged load theft.

In reference to a Facebook post of a subscriber complaining about loss of load due to 3rd party transactions, we at Gotdeals Mobile, Inc. are taking full responsibility for the inconvenience that the customer experienced due to issues encountered in our servers. We sincerely apologize to Globe Telecom and their customer for the damage that this may have caused them. We have rectified the issue to ensure that it will not happen again.

Globe General Counsel Atty. Froilan Castelo said, “We want to assure our customers that we have clauses in our contracts with partner content providers which penalize those who resort to fraud. We are also implementing stricter opt-in guidelines to make our customers aware that they are signing up for VAS subscription which entails charges.”

Globe also reminds customers that upon receipt of any push text message with an access code, they can text HELP to the access code number to verify service status, then text STOP to discontinue the service if they want to.

To further protect its customers, Globe also has a prepaid load notification service called Load Watch to help prepaid mobile customers get real-time balance and updates on usage of their load. With this service, customers have better control of their load should there be unwarranted deductions.

Globe encourages customers to report unwarranted load deductions on VAS services so these incidents can be investigated and properly addressed. Castelo said, “We will not hesitate to impose sanctions against those vendors or partners who are found guilty.”

Globe Telecom partners with Pilipinas Shell for enhanced network coverage and better customer service as Globe Telecom plans to build more cell sites for its network infrastructure expansion.

The partnership enables Globe to widen its network build amid insatiable demand for mobile services, particularly data. The collaboration also allows the leading telecommunications provider to establish GoWiFi hotspots in select Shell service stations, providing Shell customers with connectivity.

“This collaboration with Shell is breath of fresh air considering the enormous challenges we encounter in establishing network infrastructure such as cell sites. This also supports our commitment in continuing to build a robust and reliable network for our customers’ expanding data needs,” Globe President & CEO Ernest Cu said.

Cesar Romero, President and CEO of Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation (PSPC) and Chairman of Shell Companies in the Philippines (SCiP) explained that the partnership with Globe supports the company’s drive and advocacy towards nation-building by helping people connect with each other. “Our partnership with Globe is in line with our vision for nation-building that includes developing smarter cities and smarter infrastructures,” he said. “We believe providing better connectivity is a vital component of progress.”

The collaboration with Shell is expected to help ease the growing need for more telecommunication infrastructure necessary for Globe to provide sufficient coverage and capacities. For several years now, Globe has been aggressive in seeking partnership with government institutions as well as with private sector organizations in a bid to expand its network reach.

“We are constantly seeking ways to improve customer experience, especially in high-traffic and strategic areas. The partnership, which we project will lead to improved mobile services, is a win-win collaboration for the two companies, benefitting both our customers,” Cu emphasized, adding Globe is hoping to replicate such partnership with other private sector organizations.

The two companies have identified 14 Shell service stations as target sites, most of which are located along major thoroughfares and major areas of converge, significantly improving mobile experience in surrounding areas. The partnership is like to be expanded to include other sites moving forward.

Shell is also in discussion with GCash for the adoption of cashless payments using quick response (QR) codes. GCash is a mobile wallet service offered by Mynt, a financial technology company owned by Globe, Ant Financial and Ayala Corp. In August last year, GCash introduced the scan to pay feature in the GCash App, allowing customers to pay by simply scanning QR (quick response) codes of merchants using their smartphones. E-payments provide safety and convenience when shopping for goods and services as people need not carry around loads of cash anymore.

For many years now, Globe Telecom’s initiative to expand its network infrastructure has been hampered by permitting challenges. At least 25 permits are needed to put up one cell site and the permitting process takes at least eight months to complete, barring major concerns from various agencies, including local government units, homeowners associations, among others.

Globe has been addressing this issue by continuously and aggressively finding solutions and pursuing collaborations with both the government and private sectors to provide quality telco service.

User-per-site density in the Philippines is about 2,244 based on Tower Exchange’ estimate of 21,000 total cell sites in the country against internet users of around 47.1 million. By comparison, Vietnam, which is similar in size to the Philippines, has a much lower user-per-site density of only 860 based on a total number of 55,000 cell sites against 47.3 million internet users. This statistic demonstrates the substantial number of cell site backlog in the country.

Globe Telecom, the Philippines’ #1 mobile brand and MET, Southeast Asia’s #1 esports tournament organizer brings together the Globe Philippine Pro Gaming League (PPGL) 2018. Dubbed as the largest multi-title esports league in the Philippines, this features three major multiple gaming platforms: Dota 2 (desktop), Tekken 7 (console), and Arena of Valor (mobile).

The Globe PPGL 2018 will be a milestone for the country’s esports industry and marks the beginning of a new era of esports entertainment in the country.

“Globe is once again embarking on a pioneering effort. After becoming the purveyor of digital lifestyle and redefining how Filipinos consume entertainment, we are set to put the Philippines on the map of gaming and eSports together with MET by launching Globe PPGL 2018,” said Ernest Cu, President and CEO of Globe Telecom. “We look forward to taking esports to greater heights, and develop world-class esports talents in the country,” added Cu.

The tournament will also be the subject of a first-of-its-kind esports television program produced alongside it. The Globe PPGL 2018 series will be a high-production serialized documentary that delves into the life stories, daily lives, and personal struggles of the players as they progress through the league. The tournament will be broadcast online via livestream while the documentary-style production will air on free television.

With this fresh take on esports entertainment, MET and Globe hope to bring both the spectacle and human elements of professional gaming to a wider audience. The show’s direction and production will cater to both mainstream audiences and existing esports fans. The tournament will also be possible with the help of other representatives from the Philippine esports industry, namely the Mobile Esports Arena and PlayBook Esports.

For MET, the Globe PPGL 2018 is also the evolution of their previous annual esports league, the MPGL. The MPGL ran for eight seasons from 2009 to 2016 over a broad range of esports titles such as Dota 2, League of Legends, CS:GO, and more. As a national league, the MPGL was also a launching pad for the careers of several amateur competitive gamers, creating now-recognized world-class Filipino esports athletes. With the Globe PPGL 2018, MET hopes to not only foster a new generation of professional player hopefuls, but also introduce a wider audience to the excitement and legitimacy of esports.

“The goal is to create the esports legends of the future—hometown heroes and local champions,” says Ronald “Rhom” Robins, Founder of MET and Father of Philippine Esports. “MET has always delivered top-notch events to cater to both pro gamers and esports fans. Now we want to reach a broader, more mainstream audience and show them the incredible appeal and legitimacy of esports.”

With the Philippines internationally recognized as an esports-loving country worldwide due to its passionate gamers and string of successful global esports events, MET and Globe believe that the time is right to bring esports entertainment to the mainstream.

The Globe PPGL 2018 tournament will begin later this 2018 with qualifier tournaments across the country before a live LAN event to determine the grand champions for each game title. The champion of the Dota 2 leg will also advance to a Southeast Asian Dota 2 tournament involving champions of other national esports leagues across the country.

More details will be announced at a later date.

Through Singapore and other countries’ best practices, Globe Telecom strengthens its advocacy to fight against illegal sites and child pornography to protect the rights of young Filipino boys and girls who are most susceptible to exploitation and abuse.

The island-state currently regulates the presence of objectionable content and conduct online through its Internet Service Providers (ISPs) as enabled by the Computer Misuse and Cybersecurity Act and carried out by Singapore’s Media Development Authority. A list of 100 websites are banned including a site that allegedly recruited underage boys for sex and nude photography.

In the Philippines, the Anti-child Pornography Act of 2009, Intellectual Property Code, and the Anti-Camcording Law were previously placed to combat child pornography and other illegal sites. In 2014, the Cyber Crime Law took effect that made any crime under the Revised Penal Code, which is a list of general punishable acts, be considered a cybercrime if done using a computer or the internet. Thus, prior laws pertaining to intellectual rights and piracy are given more support for enforcement.

With enabling laws, regulatory agencies such as the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), Intellectual Property Office (IPO), and the Optical Media Board (OMB) among others can learn from the practice of other countries if the Philippines is really serious at combating piracy and child pornography.

Yoly Crisanto, Globe SVP for Corporate Communications, said: “This advocacy is important especially as we contribute greatly to the development of a digital nation. We want to provide our customers with safe and quality content and ensure that our products and services are not used for illegal activities. At the same time, we want to protect intellectual property rights including our own original content and the licensed content of our global and local partners so that we can give the people who create content what’s rightfully due them.”

In 2017, Globe invested 2.7 million dollars to improve its Domain Name System (DNS) with several blocking capabilities that enabled the company to block close to 2,500 domains or sites found to have lewd and child pornography-related content and will continue to actively look out for such illegal sites.

Although the Philippines has Republic Act 9775 or the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009 to protect every child from all forms of exploitation and abuse, sadly the country continue to top the list of global sources of child pornography based on the United Nations Children’s Fund’s (UNICEF) The State of The World’s Children 2017 report entitled “Children in a Digital World. The situation, however, is expected to improve with the signing into law of the child online protection provision in RA 10929 or the Free Internet in Public Places Act.

The Unicef report noted that the pervasiveness of the Internet, mobile apps and online payment methods further aided in the proliferation of child pornography and sex trafficking.

It was collaborated by another report from the International Justice Mission, a human rights group handling cases of online exploitation of children in the Philippines which noted that 8 out of 10 victims that they have rescued are 12 years old and below, some even as young babies.

Under Philippine law, “child pornography” refers to ”any representation, whether visual, audio, or written combination thereof, by electronic, mechanical, digital, optical, magnetic or any other means, of child engaged or involved in real or simulated explicit sexual activities”.

The fight against child pornography and illegal sites is part of Globe Telecom’s #PlayItRight advocacy campaign to ensure that its products and services are not used in illegal activities and to protect the copyrighted content of its global partners.
