VillageConnect | Globe intensifies online safety efforts, blocks nearly half a million child porn sites in 2023 | Leading digital solutions platform Globe made a significant stride in ensuring online safety for children in 2023, blocking a total 489,849 child pornography sites last year, a 22 percent jump from the 401,487 sites blocked in 2022.

The number of disabled URLs hosting lewd content went up by 21.8 percent, reaching 486,802 in 2023 from 399,550 in the previous year. The figure for blocked domains also saw a 56.5 percent surge to 3,047 in 2023 from 1,947 in the same period the year before.

“We believe that a safer digital environment for our children requires a multi-pronged approach. Beyond blocking harmful content, we want to foster a culture of vigilance, awareness, and collaboration to protect the most vulnerable members of our society from the pervasive threats that lurk online,” said Anton Bonifacio, Globe Chief Information Security Officer.

In collaboration with the government and other stakeholders, Globe continues to enhance its capabilities to detect and block access to child pornography and other illegal sites.

Through its #MakeITSafePH campaign launched in 2017, Globe has been actively aligning its efforts with the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009 (Republic Act 9775). This law requires all internet service providers (ISPs) to deploy technologies that prevent access to or transmission of child pornography.

Globe earlier invested $2.7 million in content filtering systems to upgrade its site-blocking capabilities. It works with government agencies and local and international organizations to bolster child protection online.

The Philippines is a leading source of OSAEC (online sexual abuse and exploitation of children content), according to the US-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). This underscores the imperative for a sustained effort to protect children online.

Village Connection | Globe maintains mobile leadership, revenues back to pre-pandemic levels | Globe has reinforced its mobile leadership with its mobile business back to pre-pandemic levels, sustaining growth with second-quarter revenue hitting P27 billion, the company’s fourth highest quarterly revenue so far.

Year on year, Globe’s first half mobile revenue is at P54 billion, a 3% improvement versus last year. It was powered entirely by the growth in mobile data services, which also reached an all-time high.

Globe’s mobile data traffic in the first half of the year hit 2,177 petabytes, a 24% increase from the same period last year. This is higher than competition’s reported 2,081 petabytes for the said period.

Mobile data average revenue per user (ARPU), likewise, continues to increase and is now at 9.7 gigabytes per month, up 20% year on year and 8% quarter on quarter.

The strong performance was driven by its prepaid brands, which utilize a lot of mobile data and other non-telco solutions such as mobile wallet GCash.

“Mobile data has benefited from increased mobility and the reopening of the economy. And moving into the second half of the year, we are well aware of the inflationary pressures that we’re facing. Because of that, our focus has always been to provide our customers with relevant products and services that will provide them the best value,” said Issa Guevarra-Cabreira, Globe’s Chief Commercial Officer.

Meanwhile, Globe continues to expand its fiber footprint, with fiber subscribers and revenues rising by a solid 102% and 135%, respectively, against the same period of 2021. Globe has already rolled out over one million Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) lines as of end June, allowing it to better compete in the market.

Home Broadband’s total revenues have also exceeded pre-pandemic levels at P13.8 billion.

Although the Home Broadband market is still underserved, Globe believes that the postpaid broadband market is already nearing its saturation point. This points to lower market segments in need of fiber connectivity at more affordable levels that remain unserved.

Globe is thus responding to this unfilled need for fiber connection in communities through the launch of TMBayan Fiber WiFi, a service especially designed for the prepaid market looking for better connectivity at a more affordable cost. TMBayan Fiber WiFi taps sari-sari stores and similar “tambayans” as community WiFi hubs.

“There is a segment of the market that is predominantly prepaid but is now in need of better speeds and more reliable connection that fiber can provide,” Cabreira said.

TMBayan Fiber WiFi is initially available in over 200 hubs across the country: 53 in Metro Manila; 89 in Luzon including Bulacan, Pampanga, Cavite, and Laguna; 31 in Visayas, specifically, Cebu; and 29 in Mindanao, including Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur.

Globe Business, the information and communications technology (ICT) arm of Globe Telecom, brings out an array of powerful tools and solutions that will enable enterprises to build and secure their business and digital ecosystems for seamless connections with customers.

Together with world-class providers Amazon Web Services, Google, RightCloud, GoCanvas, Trustwave, and Bitsight, Globe Business was able to capitalize on Cloud and Cybersecurity innovations to help companies glide smoothly in their journey towards digitalization. These tools took center stage during the “Breakthrough with Globe Business Solutions” event at EDSA Shangri-la Hotel attended by key leaders and executives from various industries.

“Globe has gone through the same journey as most of our enterprise clients. We always need to try new technologies, set up quickly at minimal cost, and constantly test new products until we figure out what will work for our customers. We cannot do this on traditional and on-premise environments where costs will be too high. Cloud has given us the flexibility and ability to innovate quickly, continuously, and at scale,” said Ernest Cu, Globe President and CEO.

He added: “As an enterprise, we also have access to critical information about our customers and as a responsible company, we need to protect that by ensuring that we have the right Cybersecurity tools in place to fight evolving threats that may compromise our data, jeopardize our operations, and most importantly impact our customers.”

Thus, to help businesses overcome corporate and technological challenges while creating and maximizing their value to the stakeholders, Globe Business offers a full suite of business solutions that drive business agility, scalability, and maximizes the current potentials of the Cloud complimented by Cybersecurity tools.

The advent of Cloud in the country has revolutionized the way businesses operate since it is easy to use as well as provides a platform that can store, analyze and calculate data. In August 2011, Globe Business became the first telecom company to provide Cloud computing solutions to the country when it launched its own Private Cloud, a service that enables its enterprise customers to acquire their cloud and optional connectivity from one provider and allowing an end-to-end solution.

Today, aside from Globe Private Cloud, Globe Business has expanded its suite of solutions to include Amazon Web Services. It also offers an array of cloud-based business applications like G Suite and GoCanvas, among others. All of these are aimed to provide enterprises with greater scalability, agility, and ease of collaboration among its workforce.

To keep enterprise data safe, secure and protected, Globe Business has put up the first and only Federated Advanced Security Operations Center (ASOC) in the Philippines. The Globe Federated ASOC offers customer service platform management, threat detection, threat hunting and incident response for its own network and the network of its customers. It is linked to Trustwave’s global network of nine ASOCs from around the world which gives Globe the ability to follow the threat where and when it happens and deliver proactive security services.

“Globe Business has been relentless in coming up with advanced solutions that fit the needs of our enterprise clients as they continue to grow and expand. We want to help them gain new customers faster and provide them with the ability to serve new markets quickly for improved profitability and lasting relationship with their customers. We want our clients to know that we can help them manage risks and strengthen digital trust to make their brands become more successful in the 21st century,” said Peter Maquera, Globe Senior Vice President for Enterprise Group.

Part of Globe Telecom’s vision is to help businesses flourish and fuel the growth of the country’s economy. Thus, to become an enabler of meaningful changes in enterprises, Globe provides them with a way to harness technology and transform digitally.

The International Finance Magazine has recognized Globe Telecom for its contribution to the development of the telecom industry in the Philippines by naming the company the Best Telecom Service Provider for 2017 against other global telco operators.

Ernest Cu, Globe President and CEO, said the recognition has strengthened his resolve to continue innovating on products, make services more relevant, and actively participate

in building the nation’s ICT infrastructure. “Evolving the telco business to give more opportunities to as many Filipinos as possible using our technology will make our brand stronger than ever,” Cu said.

The International Finance Magazine recognizes and honors organizations and individuals in the international finance industry that make a significant difference heralding the highest standards of innovation and performance.

Recently, Cu was selected among global leaders and opinion makers to share his insights in the documentary released in February 2018 about the new Netflix original film Altered Carbon.

Globe allocates around $850 million annually to improve its mobile and home broadband services to accommodate the growing demand for of its customers.

Globe Telecom ends 2017 with a 6% consolidated service revenues growth from last year (P127.9 billion), the highest full-year revenue level posted by the company.

The sustained revenue momentum was driven by the solid growth in data-related products brought about by the increasing popularity of streaming and on-demand video content. This was likewise enabled by the game-changing initiatives rolled-out by the company, including the promotion of the digital lifestyle, innovative and relevant offers and content partnerships, underpinned by a robust 3G and 4G network.

“We are pleased with the strong performance of the company this year, maintaining our momentum and posting positive full year revenue and EBITDA results,” Globe President & CEO Ernest Cu, said. “We are confident that our continued investments in our network’s data capacity and coverage, will allow us to continue to provide superior customer experience and improve the over-all connectivity in the country, while building a solid foundation to deliver sustainable long-term growth and shareholder value,” Cu added.

Mobile revenues grew 7% year-on-year, at P98.5 billion in 2017 from the P92.3 billion reported a year ago, driven by the continued mobile data revenue growth as more Globe customers embraced the digital lifestyle. Globe Prepaid and TM, the company’s mass-market brand, posted revenue growths of 11% and 8%, respectively, against the same period last year, while Globe Postpaid recorded a 1% increase year-on-year.

Globe Telecom’s mobile subscriber base reached 60.7 million as of end-December 2017, down 3% from the 62.8 million subscribers reported a year ago. The decline in the cumulative mobile customer base was due to the change in reporting of the company’s prepaid subscribers beginning 2017.

On a product perspective, mobile data remains to be the biggest contributor to total mobile revenues, increasing contribution to 44% against 38% a year ago. Mobile data service revenues reached P43.1 billion in 2017, 23% higher than the P35.0 billion reported a year ago. Mobile data traffic grew 66% from 361 petabytes to 600 petabytes in the year just ended, given the increasing demand for the company’s data-driven product portfolio. On the other hand, mobile SMS revenues were flat and mobile voice declined by 5% year-on-year. But on a normalized basis, mobile data revenues would have grown by 30% year-on-year while mobile SMS and voice would have declined by 7% and 4% respectively, as both products continue to be challenged due to the shift to internet-based applications, consistent with global trends.

The Globe home broadband business likewise sustained its growth momentum at P15.6 billion in 2017, increasing revenues by 7% year-on-year, with total subscriber base now reaching 1.3 million or 15% growth from a year ago. The solid growth in revenues was driven by the continued customer expansion in fixed wireless solutions, given the favorable customer response to the latest Globe home broadband plans. These latest plans provide customers value for money, with broadband bundles and customizable plans that suit the customers’ lifestyles.

Globe Telecom’s corporate data business likewise grew 4% year-on-year at P10.3 billion in 2017 from the P9.9 billion posted in 2016, due to the strong demand for data-driven solutions by corporates in the country. This increasing requirement has generated customer base expansion, circuit count increase and higher usage that contributed to the revenue growth in the corporate data business. Traditional fixed line voice revenues on the other hand, declined by 8% at P3.5 billion from a year ago.

Globe posted solid consolidated EBITDA, ending the year with P53.3 billion, up 7% from a year ago. Total operating expenses and subsidy grew in step with revenues, increasing by 6% year-on-year to P74.6 billion from P70.6 billion last year, as Globe continued to re-invest gains to support the growing customer base and the aggressive expansion of its data network. EBITDA margin was at 42%, higher than the previous year’s margin of 41%.

Despite the strong growth in EBITDA, the increased investments in the company’s data network pushed non-operating expenses and depreciation charges higher for the period, leading to Globe posting a 5% decline in net income at P15.1 billion, as against the P15.9 billion reported in 2016. The 2% increase in non-operating expenses was largely due to the increase in interest expenses and spectrum amortization related to the SMC telco asset acquisition. This, however, was partly offset by the recognition of a onetime gain last September, related to the increase in fair value of the retained equity interest of Globe in Globe Fintech Innovations.

Globe Telecom’s core net income, which excludes the impact of non-recurring charges, and foreign exchange and mark-to-market charges, likewise declined by 15% year-on-year to only P13.5 billion from P16.0 billion in 2016, with the full year impact of the SMC telco asset acquisition.

Globe Telecom said its board approved the first quarterly distribution of cash dividend of P22.75 per share for holders of its common shares. The dividend will be paid to shareholders on record as of February 20, 2018, payable on March 5, 2018.

“The first quarter cash dividend payment total is about P3 billion,” noted Globe Chief Finance Officer Rizza Maniego-Eala.

The approval of the first quarter cash dividend follows strong full-year revenues posted by the company in 2017. Maintaining its growth momentum last year, Globe generated revenues totaling P127.9 billion, a 6% growth from a year earlier. The sustained revenue momentum was driven by the solid growth in data-related products brought about by the increasing popularity of streaming and on-demand video content.

Mobile revenues grew 7% year-on-year, at P98.5 billion in 2017 from the P92.3 billion reported a year ago, driven by the continued mobile data revenue growth as more Globe customers embraced the digital lifestyle. Mobile data service revenues reached P43.1 billion in 2017, 23% higher than the P35.0 billion reported a year ago.

Globe home broadband business also sustained its growth momentum at P15.6 billion in 2017, increasing revenues by 7% year-on-year, with total subscriber base now reaching 1.3 million or 15% growth from a year ago. The solid growth in revenues was driven by the continued customer expansion in fixed wireless solutions, given the favorable customer response to the latest Globe home broadband plans.

In an effort to contribute to the cleanliness and maintenance of the various festival venues around the city, Globe led a clean-up activity to collect trash left after the party as part of its #GlobeDinagyang 2018 lineup of events.

Since the inception of the religious and cultural Dinagyang Festival in 1967, Iloilo hosts an annual celebration that includes a fluvial procession, street dancing, the Kasadyahan Cultural Parade, and the Dinagyang Ati Competition. According to estimates, this year’s Dinagyang drew in at least 50,000 spectators who watched the competition alone.

The clean-up was held the day after Love Dance, a party organized by Globe in partnership with Headrush. Love Dance was attended by over 3,500 people who saw some of Manila’s best DJs including Mars Miranda, Carlo Atendido, and Deltrastreet, among others.

Volunteers from Globe and Headrush collected 28 bags worth of trash that were left during the wake of the event.

“Globe is committed to creating next-level digital experiences for our customers through our events, but we are also committed to ensuring that the event venues we use are taken care of through clean up drives. We are also glad and thankful for the volunteers who helped us gather more waste and clean the different areas,” shared Yoly Crisanto, Globe Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications.

In the past, Globe has organized various environmental activities as part of its initiatives on sustainability and responsible partying. Since 2012, Globe has launched programs in Boracay on marine life protection, offshore clean-up training, support for conservation efforts by local stakeholders, and raising environmental awareness among the youth and local residents.

Do you #PlayItRight? Do you prefer downloading or streaming movies online illegally rather than watching from legitimate sources like cinemas and recognized streaming platforms? It may be free, but what they don’t know is that aside from harming the entertainment industry, they’re also harming themselves.

To educate viewers on the dangers of illegal content consumption, Globe launched #PlayItRight, an advocacy campaign to encourage its customers and the public to play content from legal sources and protect the copyright of its global content partners, while ensuring that its network, products and services are not used in illegal activities.

“Every movie, series, and other forms of content downloaded from non-legitimate sources exposes the viewer to dangers they may not know about,” says Yoly Crisanto, senior vice president for Corporate Communications of Globe. “To protect our customers, our partners and our network from illegal activity and the dangers that come with it, Globe is offering affordable access to world-class and high quality content from Disney, HOOQ, Cartoon Network, Tribe, and YouTube, and even bundle them with our services for free for new customers” added Crisanto.

Why should you #PlayItRight? Here are five important reasons:

Avoid identity theft

Accessing content through illegal means exposes viewers to identity theft. Many websites will ask viewers to download a file containing a video player, which is accompanied by, or completely replaced with dangerous malware that can steal private information like passwords, bank account numbers, and credit card numbers.

Protect yourself against malware and viruses on your devices

Apart from information-stealing malware, illegally downloaded content may expose the viewer to viruses that may be accompanied by the video file. These viruses can lead to loss of data, slow internet connection, and unwarranted pop-up windows. Sometimes an antivirus software is not enough to combat these viruses.

Don’t do it unless you want to go to jail

Many people have said that there’s nothing wrong with downloading and accessing pirated content since it’s easily accessible online, but under Republic Act 8293 (Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines) and Republic Act 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012), viewers who are caught participating in online piracy will have to pay a hefty fine and get jail time. House Bill 6187 (Anti-Online Piracy Act) is currently being reviewed to implement stricter measures for illegally-consumed content.

Further belief in this misconception also exposes internet users to the dangers of illegal sites, including those that host child pornography. Globe is adapting global best practices applied in Singapore and other countries where there is active regulation towards illegal sites and child pornography, and strongly supports the Republic Act 9775 or the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009. In 2017 alone, Globe has blocked close to 2,500 websites containing lewd content and child pornography.

Respect content creators

Hundreds of cast and crew members take thousands of hours to create one movie that they hope to make a profit on. For example, the Metro Manila Film Festival entry All Of You starring Derek Ramsey and Jennylyn Mercado took 78,000 hours to produce by 130 cast and crew. Illegal content consumption disrespects the money, hard work, and effort put into making it, especially to the crew whose only source of income is in film production.

Support the film industry

By watching content illegally, viewers are depriving members of the film industry from earning what is rightfully theirs. Everyone in the industry earns from ticket sales, film distribution, and royalties, and watching films from illegitimate sources lowers revenues, which could mean that studios and independent filmmakers will create less films.

To make sure that you are protected from the dangers of online piracy, make sure to #PlayItRight. Watch your favorite and the latest movies and TV shows only in theaters and on recognized streaming platforms.
