Tips for Travelling with Your Dog

If you are a dog owner who is planning a trip, you must have at least thought about what it would be like to bring your friend along. Although this would slightly complicate your travel arrangements, you also need to think about the benefits. Namely, you wouldn’t have to organise for your dog to receive proper care while you’re away and you’d be able to spend more time with it and make your bond even stronger.

However, in order to be able to reap all the benefits, you have to know what to do and how to behave if you’re travelling with your dog. So, if you’ve analysed the situation carefully and realised that it’s worth the effort, take a look at these tips, which should help both you and your four-legged friend make the most of the time spent together.

Use the crate

You may not feel great about having to squeeze your dog into a crate, but it’s absolutely necessary, regardless of the means of transportation. What you need to realise is that it’s much safer for everyone involved if your friend is kept safe and away from the driver and other passengers, for example.

It’s always a good idea to give it a chance to run and get well exercised before you put it in the crate, so that it’s more likely to rest during the trip. Also, make sure the crate doesn’t contain anything that would harm your companion, such as loose collars and leashes. Finally, don’t be rough on your dog and shove it into the crate, but allow it to enter itself. Your body language and energy should be positive and affirmative so that your dog feels safe.

Travelling by car

Once crated, your dog is less likely to cause distraction to the driver and it’s also protected from injuries resulting from you having to brake suddenly. Remember not to feed your dog while in motion, but use breaks to give it some small treats. Also, use that time to have fun and exercise your friend a bit. Finally, don’t ever leave your dog in a parked car when it’s sunny outside. You can’t really keep the windows open fully for safety reasons, but you’ll create an oven inside the car and your dog will suffer greatly from dehydration, which may have horrible consequences.

Flying

First and foremost, check the rules regarding pet travel with the airline and get all the papers, such as a health certificate, if necessary. Needless to say, your dog will have to be crated, and you shouldn’t wait until you enter the airport to put it in one. You don’t want the chaos and hassle in the airport building to make your dog nervous before the flight. Make sure your dog doesn’t eat a few hours before the trip to avoid starting the trip on a full stomach or bladder.

If you’re travelling by plane to a distant destination, such as Australia, you don’t want to carry dog food with you because of luggage restrictions. You can order it later from a reliable reseller. Also, there are quality anxiety and calming dog supplements in Australia that can reduce noticeable signs of stress like restlessness, pacing or trembling that can occur when your dog is adjusting to a new place.

Medication and other tips

You might have heard that it’s much better to medicate your dog before a trip. While opinions are divided on this one, the prevailing one suggests that you should avoid doing so. Sedatives are addictive and if your dog gets used to them, you’ll have problems. Instead, bring your dog’s favourite toy or blanket to provide comfort.

If you’re staying in a hotel, make sure your dog is at its best behaviour, since you don’t want other guests to be disturbed by its barking. As soon as you reach the destination, take it for a long walk to get to know the area. Allow it time to absorb all the smells, sounds and sights, so that it feels more relaxed during the stay.

Travelling with your dog requires certain additional steps and effort, but the chance to spend more time with your best friend while away from home is simply too good to be missed. If you follow these tips, you’ll be less likely to encounter problems that might ruin the whole experience.
